Media Mail Girth Restriction Of 108 Inches

I just decided to sell off a bunch of my CDs. I’ve sold a lot of them last year, and decided to cut through my collection again. I put them on Craigslist, found a buyer and he asked if I could ship to him via USPS Media Mail. Media Mail is slower, but less expensive shipping, especially for heavier items like CDs (only certifiable media related items, like CDs, qualify for Media Mail). Anyway, to estimate the shipping cost for my buyer, and to make sure the package would qualify, I looked up the guidelines for Media Mail on the USPS website.

The last bullet point under “Rules and Restrictions” is that the maximum length and girth of a Media Mail package is 108 inches.

Glamour Magazine’s 10 Things To Give Yourself This Holiday Season

This is a good one. I especially like the 108 findings that my girlfriend begrudgingly gives me. This one comes from a recent issue of her Glamour Magazine. They had a little bit called 10 Things To Give Yourself This Holiday Season. In it the #5 item says to give “A gorgeous photo of yourself, even if you have to snap 108 shots to get it.”. Haha, I love it! She knew I would like it for the double whammy of 108 and photography being mentioned in the same item.

108 Likes For The Vivian Maier Photography Book

My sister, who likes to pass on photo related news to me, was telling me about this cool story. Someone recently discovered a huge collection of images by a New York City “street photographer” named Vivain Maier. She was actually a nanny who had stashed hundreds of thousands of her images and rolls of film in a storage locker. Many years later her locker was auctioned off due to delinquent payments (a-la- Storage Wars). And now her huge collection of photography is being archived and presented to the public. I went on to Amazon once my sister told me about the story and looked up the book. At the exact time I looked it up, considering purchasing it, I noticed the book had 108 Likes on its Amazon.com page at that time.

108 Is A Recurring Theme In Baseball

One of the first things we learned about 108 that really stuck with us is that there are 108 stitches in a baseball. Here is a quote from Bull Durham, the classic baseball movie, that mentions it and another popular baseball fact:

“There are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary. And there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance.”

This year marks the 108th year that the world series has been going on. The first one was in 1903. 2011 minus 1903 is 108 years, but since the first series was played in the first year you technically would have to add 1 making it 109 series played. Except for that there was a boycott of the Series in 1904 so now we are in the 108th World Series. **UPDATE: I’m not sure where my math went wrong, but I have since learned that this year was the 107th World Series. My buddy Eric was right, next year is the 108th.

And I need to do some more research on this, but after reading a recent Sports Illustrated article about Jack Swift it appears as though a minor league schedule contains, or contained at one time, 108 games.

108 Problems With The Buckeyes Offense

OK, there might not be 108 individual problems with the offense of the Ohio State Buckeyes, but it’s safe to say they have their fair share of problems right now. I’m a Buckeyes fan, so I was dismayed to find this recent 108 sighting. There was a sidebar article in a recent Sports Illustrated I was reading (Stewart Mandel’s “Extra Points”) that mentioned that the Ohio State Buckeye’s offense is currently rated 108th in the nation. Yikes!

$108 Million Powerball Winner In Maryland

I bought a Powerball lotto ticket recently. No, I didn’t win. But when I checked online to see what the lotto numbers were for my drawing the Maryland Lottery site had a pretty big headline about a Powerball winner from Maryland. The headline reads “Congratulations to our $108 million Powerball winner”! The image of the check says the winning was a little more than just $108 million of course, but the headline speaks for itself.

108 In The Movie Hall Pass

I wish I could have a screenshot of this… but in the movie Hall Pass there is a scene where Christina Applegate’s character goes to a motel to see someone. When she gets there and knocks on the door the shot is framed so that the wall with the room number is very prominent and close to the viewer. Plain as day, there is the big ‘ol room number 108. I saw this one with my girlfriend who knows all about 108 so it made the experience that much more fun.

Saturday Night Live’s 2011 season premiere featured Alec Baldwin discussing his record breaking 17th time hosting of the show, beating out (once again) nemesis Steve Martin. Steven Martin shows up to test Baldwin’s cleanliness of drugs. His drug analysis expert, Seth Rogan shows up, does a search of Steve Martin’s name and his number of hits is clearly 108.

108 In My Google Alert

Have you ever used Google Alerts? I think they’re pretty handy. I use them for my businesses because they, true to name, alert you when something you want to keep an eye out for pops up. So for example, I have a Google Alert for Aaron Haslinger so that I know if someone has put something on the internet relating to my photography etc.

I also have one for the first name I started doing business under, Primary Studios. This alert gets some random hits because the words primary and studios can appear next to each other in sentences without referring to my photography biz. For example, an alert could reference an article that says something like “… the primary studios for Warner Brothers records…”. Since I get these fairly often I just see ‘em and delete ‘em abut this one caught my attention for the obvious reason. Check out the link title for this result:

And then here is the page that the result pointed to. It is about R. R. Donnelly and Total Immersion cutting exactly 108 jobs.

Carl Crawford of the Boston Red Sox hit triple # 107 AND 108 today versus the Detroit Tigers. He is now the active leader in triples. It’s interesting how I happened to stumble across the game as he hit career # 108.
